"There came a May Day though, May 1, 1901, when my heart was broken by the sad news of my Mother's death. A group of girls and boys went for a May Day walk to gather wild flowers up on the volcano and Black Ridge. On returning home my Uncle Lyman Canfield was waiting to tell me the sad news.
